In the 1990s, an incredible revolution swept across North American dance floors. It was an underground revolution, kept largely away from the mainstream public. This phenomenon was called the rave scene, where thousands of electronic music fans gathered together at secret, below-the-radar events, and partied well into the morning to the most progressive, cutting edge beats on the planet.
Though raves ranged across the country, the capital of this movement was Southern California, where the best electronic music talent in the world came together to produce an atmosphere so amazing and over the top that it secured its own unique chapter in the history of American pop culture.
DANCEFLOOR THUNDERSTORM: Land Of The Free, Home Of The Rave is the landmark photography book that shows the American rave scene at its peak, written by one of the ultimate rave insiders—dance music photojournalist Michael Tullberg. Photographing and writing for nearly all of the major electronic music magazines of the day, including URB, Mixer, BPM Culture and Insider, Tullberg captured the rave scene it in all its visually spectacular glory like none other.
With his uniquely tripped-out, psychedelic images and insightful words, Tullberg takes the reader back into the innermost heart of the rave scene—to the warehouses, soundstages, after-hours clubs, deserts and mountains where rhythmic magic was made. He pulls the curtain back on the early days of the biggest American dance music festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival, Nocturnal Wonderland and Ultra Music Festival, revealing a joyous and enthusiastic generation of fans intent on changing the world of dance music…one party at a time.
DANCEFLOOR THUNDERSTORM: Land Of The Free, Home Of The Rave contains hundreds of top-notch photographs over 308 pages. It features an all-star lineup of some of the most influential electronic music artists of all time, such as Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Frankie Bones, Fatboy Slim, Moby, the Chemical Brothers, Kraftwerk, the Crystal Method, Massive Attack and many, many more. There are also in-depth interviews with DJs such as Sandra Collins and Christopher Lawrence. The book also contains reproductions of rave fliers, laminates, rave artifacts and magazine covers…in other words, it is the genuine article, a true representation of a cultural explosion.
EDITORIAL REVIEWS FOR “DANCEFLOOR THUNDERSTORM”
6AM GROUP: “If you’ve ever seen or searched for photos of raves from the 90’s, there’s a high probability that you’ve come across the work of Michael Tullberg. Present at one of the most dynamic times in West Coast rave culture, Tullberg was one of the primary photographers to document the widespread rave movement of the time. With years of photos at his disposal, it was only a matter of time before the public was exposed to his vast collection.”
“Without Michael Tullberg, we may not have such detailed accounts and photos to look back on. Dancefloor Thunderstorm will act as a comprehensive guide to one of the most dynamic times in dance music, and can be enjoyed by ravers, old and new. After looking through various photos with Michael, I realize that the work he has done is an essential piece in the history of dance music – not just for California, or even the United States, but for the world.”
LA WEEKLY: “Tullberg does a good job of capturing the scene — the superstar DJs, the club kids, the chilled-out crews, the pro-rave demonstrations — but more importantly, he pulls the viewer into the parties. Light refracts, piercing images like those moments when your eyes have been open for far too long. Scenes morph into vortices that blur at the edges, like your memories will the next day. In Tullberg's photos, faces melt and hands multiply. They are photos that make you feel like you are in this moment that you hope will never end.”
PAPERMAG.COM: “A new book, DANCEFLOOR THUNDERSTORM: Land Of the Free, Home Of The Rave, showcases the work of photojournalist Michael Tullberg who documented the rave scene in Los Angeles and Southern California throughout the '90s and '00s. His pictures capture young people in ecstasy (sometimes, we imagine, literally) dancing to the beats of top DJs like Paul Oakenfold and Richie Hawtin along with local producers on the scene. Along with photos, the book includes anecdotes and remembrances of parties, promoters, DJs and more that'll make you want to grab a pacifier and a glow stick and turn on some Prodigy.”
MIXMAG.NET: “A photobook from electronic music photojournalist Michael Tullberg showcases images of the glory days of the American rave scene, before EDM was even a twinkle in Steve Aoki's eye. 'Dancefloor Thunderstorm: Land Of The Free, Home Of The Rave' charts the history of the underground dance movement during the 90s and 00s before it was dwarfed by the stadium EDM concerts that take place today.”
BUZZFEED.COM: “Photographer Michael Tullberg was a witness to the sights and sounds, and his new book Dancefloor Thunderstorm, reveals his first-hand account of what ’90s rave culture was really about.”
UNKNOWNMALE.COM, 11/30/2015: “It’s hard to believe there was a time when America’s rave scene wasn’t dominated by EDM’s legions of fist-pumping steroid monkeys and glow stick-waving “woo” girls. But, thanks to photojournalist Michael Tullberg, we can be reminded of America’s glorious rave past in his recent photo book Dancefloor Thunderstorm: Land Of The Free, Home Of The Rave. The project chronicles the history of the American underground dance movement during the ’90s and ’00s, featuring stunning shots of parties atop mountains and deep within quarries. Now this is PLUR I could get on board with.”
MICHAEL TULLBERG BIOGRAPHY
MICHAEL TULLBERG is one of the longest-running electronic music photojournalists in North America. Beginning in 1996, Michael comprehensively covered the underground rave scene around the country, and around the world as well. His words and pictures helped define the public face of the American rave scene at a time when the mainstream press was largely content to present the scene solely as a source of controversy.
Through the peak years of the rave scene covered in DANCEFLOOR THUNDERSTORM: Land Of The Free, Home Of The Rave (1996 through 2002), Michael’s images, interviews and articles appeared domestically and abroad in the pages of magazines such as Rolling Stone, SPIN, URB, BPM Culture, Mixer, Insider, Mixmag, Q, Hybrid (Japan), Lotus, Sweater, and others—more than any other electronic music photojournalist of the period. During that era, he not only befriended most of the major dance music DJs and artists in the world, but also shot album covers for several of them, including icons like Carl Cox and Ferry Corsten.
Today, Michael Tullberg photographs for Getty Images, contributing entertainment pictures from the red carpet, concerts and celebrity benefits. He is also the author and publisher of The Raver Stories Project, a collection of some of the most memorable experiences to be found in the rave scene. He has begun lecturing at major universities across the country about the history of electronic music in America. And, he still shoots raves when he can find the time.
