In the 1990s, an incredible revolution swept across North American dance floors.  It was an underground revolution, kept largely away from the mainstream public.  This phenomenon was called the rave scene, where thousands of electronic music fans gathered together at secret, below-the-radar events, and partied well into the morning to the most progressive, cutting edge beats on the planet.

MICHAEL TULLBERG BIOGRAPHY

MICHAEL TULLBERG is one of the longest-running electronic music photojournalists in North America.  Beginning in 1996, Michael comprehensively covered the underground rave scene around the country, and around the world as well.  His words and pictures helped define the public face of the American rave scene at a time when the mainstream press was largely content to present the scene solely as a source of controversy. 

Through the peak years of the rave scene covered in DANCEFLOOR THUNDERSTORM: Land Of The Free, Home Of The Rave (1996 through 2002), Michael’s images, interviews and articles appeared domestically and abroad in the pages of magazines such as Rolling Stone, SPIN, URB, BPM Culture, Mixer, Insider, Mixmag, Q, Hybrid (Japan), Lotus, Sweater, and others—more than any other electronic music photojournalist of the period.  During that era, he not only befriended most of the major dance music DJs and artists in the world, but also shot album covers for several of them, including icons like Carl Cox and Ferry Corsten. 

Today, Michael Tullberg photographs for Getty Images, contributing entertainment pictures from the red carpet, concerts and celebrity benefits.  He is also the author and publisher of The Raver Stories Project, a collection of some of the most memorable experiences to be found in the rave scene. He has begun lecturing at major universities across the country about the history of electronic music in America.  And, he still shoots raves when he can find the time.
